There are two kinds of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 2 usually presents in adults and risk factors include age, being overweight, lack of exercise, family history and ethnic origin. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled but not cured. Before developing type 2, people experience "Pre-diabetes", which if detected can be reversed. SSt is addressing detection and monitoring of both of these conditions.

Type 1 diabetes results from an inability of the body to produce insulin and usually presents in children and adolescents. Type 1 diabetes management is not an area of focus for SSt.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 is a dangerous disease that consumes around 10% of Western healthcare budgets today. This could rise to 30% by 2030.

It is a major cause of blindness, amputation and kidney disease.

Pre-Diabetes

Pre-Diabetes affects over 2 million people in the UK, over 20 million in the rest of Europe and over 20 million in the US. Most of these people are unaware of their condition.

People with type 2 diabetes frequently go undiagnosed for 10
years or more. For many of these, dangerous complications have
already developed and the complications lead to the diagnosis. A
simple blood test however, for glucose levels following a fast, can
detect both type 2 and Pre-Diabetes before complications develop.

The most reliable test is a quantitative blood test performed in the
morning, following an overnight fast. This is difficult to achieve; it is
inconvenient for the public and is logistically difficult for clinics to
provide en mass. SSt's will provide an accessible and reliable test
for detection and monitoring of type 2 and Pre-Diabetes.
